Home Sports Bulldogs Win Twice in Weekend Success

by Jordan McCoy

The Concordia men’s basketball team is on a five game winning streak after two wins on Friday and Saturday.

Friday, the Bulldogs faced GPAC opponent Dordt College on a road trip to Sioux Center, Iowa. While the Bulldogs struggled at the beginning of the season on the road, they are now on a roll. The final score against the Defenders was 100-91 in favor of Concordia.

It was a big game for senior guard Eli Ziegler, one in which he scored his 1,000th point as a Concordia Bulldog. Ziegler scored 27 points in the game.

“It’s a great feeling,” says Ziegler. “But more importantly, we are finding success on the court and that’s really what I care about.”

Also in double digits for the Bulldogs were freshman guard/forward Tanner Shuck who scored 19 points, senior center Chandler Folkerts with 18 points and sophomore guard Chris Johnstone with 16 points.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs were also victorious. They triumphed over Oglala Lakota College 108-70.

The usual starters for Concordia were kept to a limited amount of minutes due to playing a game just a day prior.

The reserve players rose to the challenge and helped the Bulldogs defeat Oglala Lakota College of South Dakota.

Freshman guard and Seward native Brevin Sloup scored 21 points in Saturday’s game. Along with Sloup were senior center Justin Damme with 19 points, freshman forward Clay Reimers with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Johnstone with 10 points.

The Bulldogs will get some much-needed rest until they face another ranked team on Wednesday. They will play Midland University on Jan. 11 at home. After the two wins this weekend, the Bulldogs have improved their record to 12-6 overall.
