Home Sports Concordia Soccer Sees Success in Match against Kansas Wesleyan

The Concordia women’s and men’s soccer teams traveled to Salina, Kansas, to play Kansas Wesleyan University on Saturday, Sept. 9 in a non-league doubleheader. The women’s team ended a double-overtime match in a 1-1 tie, and the Men’s team ended with a 3-2 victory.

The women’s team began their game with an offensive sparking 25 minutes into the game with a goal by junior Becky Freeman off of an assist by freshman Cheyenne Smith. Kansas Wesleyan responded less than two minutes later with a goal to tie the score 1-1. The score was knotted at 1 for the remainder of the game. After two overtimes, the game officially ended in a tie.

Sophomore goalie Jessica Knedler had five saves throughout the game for the Bulldogs. Kansas Wesleyan outshot Concordia 10-7 on the game, but Concordia had the 2-0 shooting advantage during overtime.

The Concordia women are now 2-0-2 on the season as they begin a stretch of away, non-conference games. On Saturday, the Bulldogs will travel to Wichita, Kansas, to take on Friends University.

After the dramatic women’s contest, the Concordia men’s team took the field against the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game with a goal from freshman Konrad Sinu. The Coyotes controlled the scoreboard for the next two goals in the 20th and 68th minutes of the game.  

Less than five minutes later, the Bulldogs responded to tie the game 2-2 on a goal by junior David Carrasco with the assist from sophomore Joao Pedro Verissimo. Carrasco assisted freshman Daniel Campbell in the 77th minute to take the 3-2 lead.

The Bulldogs held onto the lead for the remainder of the game to win the contest. Goalie Jack Bennett had four saves in the game. Concordia outshot the Coyotes 17-9 and 13-6 in the second half.

The Concordia men will play McPherson College (Kansas) on Wednesday in a home matchup that will begin at 7 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium. Concordia now stands at 2-2 on the season against non-league opponents.
