After consideration, the off-campus housing policy will remain the same for the 2017-2018 academic year.

A potential change that would have allowed students to move off-campus as soon as they reached 90 credits was proposed to the Student Senate during the 2017 spring semester.

“After meeting with (the) Student Senate and hearing from a few other students, we thought it would be good to table it for the time being,” Vice President of Student Affairs and Athletics Gene Brooks said in an
email interview. “If we want to consider it again we would like to provide more time to solicit more student feedback.”

The current policy does not allow students to move off-campus until they are 21 years old and have lived on campus for three years. It is intentionally designed to maintain Concordia as a residential university.

“Much of the ‘Concordia Experience’ occurs in the context of relationships and community, which is a primary focus of residential on-campus living,” Brooks said. “Additionally, students who live on campus have easy access to the facilities, resources and services which are in place to help them succeed.”

Concordia can currently house approximately 900 students in its 11 residence halls.

“…the university has made and continues to make significant investments into its residential living facilities,” Brooks said. “…the policy also therefore helps ensure that we actually keep those residence halls full which also aids in keeping room and board costs down for all students.”

The new policy was not meant to change the effect of the housing policy, but rather to clear up confusion surrounding the current policy. According to Brooks, there has been some confusion regarding the requirements to live off-campus in the past. The new policy was considered in order to create a more definite requirement. However, Brooks said that he felt the housing policy was implemented “better than previous years” during the 2016-2017 academic year.
