Home Opinion Limited Access to Track Stirs Concern for Students and Community

by Jacy Johnston

The Concordia Student Senators have been working hard this year to improve life on Concordia’s campus. One of our biggest plans for change is our access to Bulldog Stadium.

The recent updates to our stadium have made it a beautiful facility for home sporting events. It is awesome to hear our teams ring the bell and have the cross suspended in the backdrop, reminding us of our mission as students and children of God.

However, we are concerned about our access to the turf and track within the stadium. Before the construction, we had full access to the stadium. It was a popular spot on sunny Sunday afternoons for a game of ultimate frisbee or soccer. Runners and joggers were able to run on the track at 5am in the dark, knowing it was a safe place to run. Now, hours are restricted for students and the public from 6am-3pm on weekdays only.

We understand the importance of protecting our assets and lengthening the life of our facilities. Nevertheless, one benefit boasted by artificial turf creators is its durability to withstand a great deal of activity over its 10-year lifespan.

We understand the importance of preventing any damaging incidents to these places. However, there have been no issues brought to the attention of the student body in the past three years concerning improper use of Bulldog Stadium by either the community or the students of Concordia.

Bulldog Stadium is a cornerstone of our campus and we as students are proud to have this facility. As students, we pay for the improvement and upkeep of this facility, and we would like to have full access to the track and field on the weekends as well as outside of a restricted 8-hour window. As Student Senators, we will work to negotiate this right for all students, and display our responsibility and pride as Concordia Bulldogs.
