Home Features Officer Spotlight: Meet Sarah Van Duser

by April Bayer

From Math Club to Sigma Tau to the Student Activities Council, our campus offers a wide variety of student organizations to choose from. Here’s a look at some of the bright minds responsible for running them: Concordia’s student officers.

Name: Sarah Van Duser

Class: Junior

Hometown: Kansas City, Missouri

Organization: International Justice Mission (IJM) Lighthouse

Position: Interim President

Major: Early Childhood Education and Director of Christian Education (DCE)

What duties do you have in leading Lighthouse?

“I basically throw together the meetings and set apart times that I meet with the other co-leaders. It’s more of a team thing. We sit down together and brainstorm about different ways that we can involve the campus.”

What is your favorite thing about working with Lighthouse?

“Just seeing and advocating for other people. Seeing them moved by (our message) and helping them learn more about (sex trafficking).”

What are some events you have coming up and how can people get involved?

“Next week, we have (an event) called Buy Flowers, Not Girls. We are selling flowers in Janzow top from 9:00 until 2:00, and the money will go to the campus club and to the International Justice Mission. We will have volunteers helping with the booth and Justice Week. People can be involved in doing that whether it’s participating in the activities or being volunteers for that.”

If there was one thing you could tell people about your organization and its cause, what would you want them to know?

“(Sex trafficking) is real. There is stuff we can do about it even though it seems so much bigger. We can do something about it.”

What are some of your favorite things to do in your spare time?

“I enjoy running and Pinterest and watching Netflix.”

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

“Probably the Pacific Northwest.”

What is your favorite Bible verse?

“Psalm 119:32. ‘I run in the path of your command for you have put my heart towards you.’”
