Home Arts & Culture Remedy Drive Gives Voice to Victims of Human Trafficking

By Rebecca Axford and Britnee Fear

Remedy Drive returned to Seward on Friday, Oct. 20 to continue raising awareness for the victims of human trafficking, playing a concert at St. John Lutheran Church.

“I really want people to know what we’re doing,” lead vocalist and guitarist David Zach said.

Remedy Drive consists of Zach, vocalist and bass guitarist Corey Horn and drummer Zach Hunter. The band formed in Lincoln 20 years ago, but are now based in Nashville, Tennessee.

Remedy Drive has been affiliated with Exodus Road, an international organization that rescues and rehabilitates victims of human trafficking, for four years. Zach had recently come back from Southeast Asia, where he worked with Exodus Road. While he was there, he went through brothels and found evidence of slavery.

Lutherans for Life sponsored Remedy Drive to come to both Seward and Lincoln as a part of the Lutherans for Life Conference. Members of the Concordia University Lighthouse Club, a chapter of the International Justice Mission, volunteered to help with the concert, and helped set up, tear down, and help man the Exodus Road table during the performance.

“I really liked what they stood for and why they were here,” sophomore Josh Corley said.

The Exodus Road table sold t-shirts, pants, headbands, bracelets, stuffed elephants and various other items that were hand-made by recovering victims. The proceeds were donated to Exodus Road. Other donations went towards technology such as recording devices, which allow them to gather evidence.

After Red Velvet 6, featuring six Concordia students, opened the concert, Remedy Drive sang numerous hit songs as well as two unreleased songs. About halfway through the concert, their fog machines set off the pre-fire alarms, but emergency responders did not arrive and the concert was able to continue.

Remedy Drive performed at St. John in 2015, as well as in the Seward bandshell in 2011.

“It was packed,” Zach said. “We get a response like this here.”

Remedy Drive sings their hit song “Daylight is Coming”.
