Home Features Students Share Love of Dance Through New Dance Club

by Sarah Groeling

Each week, Concordia students gather to learn different dances and meet new people. Led by juniors Naomi Bauer and Tiffany Smith, Dance Club has been a weekly event since the beginning of September.

Dance club gathers on Friday nights at eight o’clock in David pit. The club offers students the chance to learn ballet, swing dancing, waltzing and tap dance. Bauer and Smith also hope to teach students how to lift their partners during dances. Along with teaching their fellow students new dancing techniques, Bauer and Smith also spent some time explaining dance terminology to those participating.

In past weeks, Bauer and Smith led an activity in which the dancers created their own eight- count dances. They also taught the dance from the movie, “Footloose.” In the future, they are hoping to lead more well-known dances.

“We kept telling ourselves that we should start a dance club to keep dancing and make it more relaxed and fun for others,” Bauer said. “We have been encouraging people to choreograph their own moves and make up their own stuff, which has been really fun.”

Bauer and Smith have both been dancing for many years, and after the two of them participated in the dance team offered on campus, they decided to give Concordia students the chance to try dancing themselves.

“I think that it is a great chance to get out and have fun, because sometimes when you are stressed, dancing can help relax you. Dance club creates a community within Concordia’s community,” Senior Grace Stults said.

The club is open to all students who have a love for dance as well as those who are looking for a new activity to try with their friends. No past experience is necessary to participate in the club’s hour-long evening’s activities. In the end, Bauer and Smith want to create a friendly and fun environment in which people can learn to love dancing.
