Every Thursday at 8 PM, you will find a group of students in the Library greenroom, gathered to de-stress with a ball of yarn.  This group is Yarn Club, one of the newest clubs on campus.

Yarn club allows students to take a break from schoolwork, have fun, socialize, and be creative.    During club meetings, you will find people laughing, snacks out on the table, with projects anywhere from advanced knitting to beginning crocheting.

Though Yarn Club, students crochet or knit items for donation.  This month, students are working on hats for active duty military.  This will be culminated in November with the Concordia Gives Military project.  After November, the yarn club will continue making items for military members, but they will also begin to create hats for premature babies and chemotherapy patients.  “Here, we de-stress with a purpose”, said yarn club founder, Salem Boehm.

Yarn club was initially started for a Business Ethics class Boehm is taking.  The class requires 24 hours of community service, so Boehm thought of creating a club for community service through her passion for yarn.

Other students including Sophomore Whitney Potschmitt, Freshman Jenna Fredrickson, and others have recently joined Yarn Club.

Any are welcome to join whether you have had experience with yarn before or not.  “We can teach you” said Boehm.  Just come with a desire to learn.

Salem also wanted to be sure her invitation extended to not only women but also to men.  There is no shame in picking up needles and yarn to help someone in need.

“Knitting is not your grandmother’s sport”, said Boehm.

Anyone interested in joining yarn club can talk to Salem or one of the new members.

The Yarn Club is also looking for yarn donations for their projects.   Anyone wishing to donate please contact Salem at salem.boehm@cune.org.  Any donations are appreciated.

As this new club takes off the ground, let us as Concordia Community support the Yarn Club and their efforts to serve to world around us.
