Concordia Nebraska achieved second place in the cheer competition and third in the dance competition at the Concordia Invitational Tournament this Saturday.
Coach Emilie Ashenbach’s cheer team has been the runner up for three consecutive years. Nebraska fell just short of first place in the attempt for their first CIT championship with 57.80 out of 90 points to Ann Arbor’s 65.82. Chicago wasn’t too far behind with 55.15 points, and Wisconsin took last place with 33.17.
The program historically has stayed fairly consistent. In the 2023-2024 season they scored 60.52 points and 79.3 in 2022-2023.
“Our team had a strong showing today at Concordia Ann Arbor for our first competition of the season,” Ashenbach said in an interview with Director of Athletic Communications Jake Knabel. “For being our first time out, I think they did a great job. We had a few hiccups, but that’s okay. We’ll use this experience to grow and refine our routine. I’m proud of the effort and energy they brought to the mat, and I’m excited to see how we progress as the season continues.”
The dance team missed second place by the slimmest of slim margins, coming only .10 points behind Wisconsin with 55.27 and 55.37 points out of 70 respectively. In first and last was Chicago with 57.70 and Ann Arbor with 54.63. The Concordia University Ann Arbor Cardinals in years past have been the toughest competition but couldn’t quite keep up with the rest in 2025.
This was the second competition for the dance team this season and the first for cheer. Last week they had a dual with the College of St Mary in Friedrich Area, getting a score of 80.9. Compared to the last two years, Nebraska has fallen by just a few points from their 60.52 points in 2024 and 60.05 in 2023 to win the tournament.
Concordia Nebraska’s cheer and dance next compete at the York University Invitational on February 7 at 3 p.m.
