Home Sports Ask an Athlete: Favorite Bible Character

by Madison Pitsch

You see them on the court, on the field, at the shooting range and on the course, but do you really know them? It is our goal in this regular feature to introduce you to some of Concordia’s athletes and give you a peek inside their personalities.

The question we posed for this issue was “Who is your favorite Bible character and why?”

Freshman golfer Murphy Sears admires Noah for his faith and determination despite the odds he faced.

“He worked really hard on the ark to save his family and the animals, and I consider myself a very hard worker in everything that I do,” Sears said.

Junior quarterback TJ Austin and sophomore defender for men’s soccer Aries Fung both like King David.

“The dude was absolutely horrible. God still found a way to use him,” Austin said. “If David can be used for God’s works then why can’t I?”

“He’s the warrior, pretty much braver than anyone else in the Bible,” Fung said. “He won an incredible fight against Goliath, not because of his physical strength but because of his faith and mental strength. He encourages me to be a warrior as remarkable as he was and to beat some good opponents who seem impossible to beat.”

Senior middle in volleyball Taylor Workman respects Esther.

“Like the verse in 2 Timothy, her story is also about being bold,” Workman said. “She knew that speaking out could be dangerous, but she did it anyway in order to save her people. She was an ordinary person, but she accomplished something extraordinary by not letting fear or timidity stop her.”

Senior Kendall Schick, who competes in Trap and Skeet, admires St. Paul.

“I especially like Paul for his courageous faith and his passion for spreading the Gospel to everywhere within his reach,” Schick said. “However, what I really enjoy about Paul is his encouragement and continued contact with the people he previously brought to Christ. We get to look into the lives of the early church members and see what trials they were facing and how Paul helps them cope with those issues in a God-pleasing manner.”
