The Concordia baseball team went 1-1 against Mount Marty over the weekend, losing game one 10-4 and winning game two 12-6 in Concordia, Kansas, on Saturday, March 25.

The Bulldogs started the run-scoring early as junior Jaydan Quinn led off game one with a home run. After striking out the side in the first inning, however, the Bulldogs were unable to contain the Lancers. The Lancers were able to scratch runs across the board in each inning to follow. Ultimately, after six and a half innings of play, the Bulldogs fell 10-4.

Senior Blake Benson pitched all six innings for the Bulldogs, collecting five strikeouts in the outing. The loss brings Benson’s record on the mound to 3-2. Sophomore Ty Nekoliczak and senior Teyt Johnson each went 2-3 with a run batted in. Sophomore Tanner Tompkins also went 2-3 and scored a run.

In game two the Bulldogs answered with an offensive outburst of their own. Mount Marty was only able to keep Concordia off the board in two of the nine innings. The Bulldogs were able to extend their two-run lead after the first three innings to six after an explosive four-run fourth inning. In the bottom of the ninth the Bulldogs struggled to close out the game, walking six Lancers. However, the Bulldogs struck out the final batter to win the game 12-6.

The Bulldogs rode the strong performances of their upperclassman to victory. Johnson went 4-4 at the plate, collecting four RBIs, one walk, and scoring three runs. Senior Frankie Cresta got his fourth win of the year after pitching eight innings of two run ball and striking out five Lancers. Senior Ben Berg went 5-5 at the dish, scoring a run as well as tallying an RBI.

The Bulldogs are 17-9 on the season with a 3-1 record against Great Plains Athletic Conference opponents. Concordia will travel to Hastings on Tuesday, March 28, for a doubleheader against the Hastings College Broncos with game one at 2:00 p.m. and game two at 5:00 p.m.
