Home Sports Bulldog Stadium Undergoes Facelift Over Summer

by Jacy Johnston

Concordia athletes will have a fresh home turf and track to compete on for the upcoming season after a spring and summer project that updated and refreshed Bulldog Stadium.

Planning for the project has been in the works for over a year, beginning on May 9, said executive VP CFO and COO Dave Kumm. The stadium was reopened on Aug. 10 for the upcoming school year.

The importance of this project was rooted in safety for the athletes and students participating in intramurals and other activities in the stadium. The decades old turf was replaced by new 2.5 inch turf with a retro Concordia logo, and the water drainage system beneath the surface was updated.

The Bulldog track also got a facelift.

“The track has lasted far beyond its life and is considered to be one of the best,”  Kumm said in an email interview. “While doing the field, it made sense to do some of the key repairs and resurfacing.”

According to Director of Facilities Rick Ihde, the track received a 5mm Beynon overlay after minor repairs to the track underlayment.

“New data connections for a future track timing system, tied to the scoreboard for results display, were also installed,” Ihde said in an email interview.

While the turf will be used in competition this fall, the updated track will see its full use in the spring semester when Concordia holds the Concordia Outdoor Invite on April 8 and hosts day two of the GPAC track meet on May 6.

The project will continue next summer with work on the north end zone. A new colonnade,  arch entrance and fencing will be added, as well as a cross tower.
