Home Features Claire Hoy Discovers Talent for Stand-Up Comedy

by Ryan Trueblood

Senior Claire Hoy proved she has what it takes to make crowds laugh during her stand-up comedy debut at Concordia’s Variety Show on Oct. 7. Since the variety show, she has continued to work on her act. After another performance at Rue 6 on Nov. 6, Hoy is planning on performing more in the spring.

Hoy started as a comedian when others recommended she sign up for Concordia’s variety show. Hoy was nervous to audition.

“I guess it could be fun,” Hoy said of the variety show. “I almost threw up on the sign-up sheet though. So I practiced, got some jokes down and auditioned.”

Hoy is inspired by one of her favorite comedians, Angela Johnson, and fills her comedy with family-friendly material that excludes swearing and crude themes.

“If you are going to be family-friendly and clean, you have to work harder,” Hoy said.

The challenges of coming up with new material may be difficult, but Hoy is looking to get as much stage time as possible, ideally 20-25 minute sets.

Hoy said she can be “a goofball on stage,” but draws from life experiences makes her comedy “relatable and funny.”

Hoy’s performances at the variety show and Rue 6 are available on YouTube under “This is Real Life.”
