Both upperclassmen and underclassmen led Concordia baseball to finish strong in the road trip to the 2017 Tucson Invitational, as the team won seven total games in the span of the tournament.

The Bulldogs went 3–2 during the second half of their trip on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Bulldogs faced Division II opponent Malone University. Although it was a hard-fought game, the Bulldogs ultimately lost 3-2. Malone’s pitcher held the Bulldogs’ offense to only two runs.

On Thursday, the Bulldogs faced Waldorf University and came out victorious with a final score of 21-6.

The Bulldogs were down 5-0 at the top of the first inning, but came back to score nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. These runs started when senior third baseman Casey Berg hit one over the fence.

After this, senior outfielder Jake Adams, senior right fielder Christian Montero, senior DH Jason Galeano and freshman infielder Jake Taylor all began hitting well and scoring runs. After this burst of momentum, they scored another 12 runs to defeat Waldorf.

Later on in the day however, the Bulldogs did not see as much success. They lost to Valley City State University with a score of 3-2. In an unlucky series of events and due to multiple errors, the Bulldogs were unable to score the tying run in the seventh inning, ultimately leading to the loss.

On Friday, the Bulldogs faced Presentation College and swept them 11-5 and 9-3.

In the first game, Adams scored his second home run of the trip, hitting a perfect 6-for-6 at bats.

In game two, Berg hit 4-for-5, senior catcher Ryan Fesmire hit 2-for-3 and Geiger went 2-for-4.

“We saw some good things but there are definitely areas that we need to improve upon,” Montero said. “We’ve lost a lot of close games but that just means we need to clean up the details.”

The Bulldogs will open at home on Friday, March 17, where they will face both Nebraska Wesleyan University and 16th-ranked University of Jamestown in a doubleheader at Plum Creek Sports Complex in Seward. The games are set for 1 and 4 p.m.
