Home Sports Concordia Baseball Goes 2-2 in Final Two Series of the Regular Season

by Garrett Suchanek

The Concordia baseball team played a pair doubleheaders on Thursday and Friday to close out its regular season. The Bulldogs split both doubleheaders, the first with Hastings College on Thursday and the second with Nebraska Wesleyan on Friday. Concordia now sits at 26-25 on the year and 11-9 in GPAC play.

On Thursday, the Bulldogs pulled out an extra-inning win in game one. Concordia defeated the Broncos 3-2 in 12 innings behind solid pitching. Junior Josh Prater came in, in relief, and went 7.2 innings, allowing one hit and striking nine Broncos out.

“Josh was great, there was no way around that,” said coach Ryan Dupic. “He just rolled out there, we were looking for him to give us a couple, he just felt good and he kept rolling.”

Senior Alex Alstott came through with the go-ahead RBI in the 12th inning, which was ultimately the game-winning RBI.

In the second game, the Broncos edged the Bulldogs by a final score of 8-7. Concordia jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but Hastings slowly chipped away at the lead. The Broncos completed the comeback in the sixth inning and took a one run lead heading into the final frame of work.

On Friday, the Bulldogs split a pair of games with Nebraska Wesleyan. Concordia took game one with a final score of 4-3, but dropped the final game 7-5. Senior Taylor Dudley scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning of the first game to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 advantage.

Concordia has now clinched a spot in the GPAC tournament for the first time in four years.

“I’m excited…for the guys about that,” Dupic said. “It’s a nice reward for the season. It’s something we want to start to do on a consistent basis.”

The GPAC tournament will be held on May 5-7 and 10. The brackets have yet to be released, but will be following the conclusion of all GPAC regular season games.
