Home Sports Concordia Softball Takes One in Doubleheader Against No. 14 Morningside

In a matchup of teams in the top half of the GPAC standings, the Concordia softball team split a doubleheader with No. 14 Morningside College on Friday, April 9. The Bulldogs dropped the first game 8-10 before blasting the Mustangs 13-3 in five innings in game two. Concordia is now 25-8 and 6-4 in GPAC.

Coming into the day, the Mustangs were 8-0 in GPAC play and continued their winning streak with a game one win. Morningside used a four-run sixth inning to earn a 10-8 game one win.

Concordia had four players with multi-hit games. Juniors Kylie Harpst and Taylor Huff, senior Julia Tyree and freshman Leah Kalkwarf each recorded at least two hits and combined for five of the eight runs.

In game two, Concordia turned up the defense and continued its offensive flurry. The Bulldogs outscored the Mustangs 13-3 and won in five innings. Concordia exploded for a 12-run first inning, which included a grand slam from sophomore Autumn Owens.

Sophomore Michaela Woodward picked up the win in game two by going three innings and giving up just three earned runs on five hits.

Concordia’s game two win handed the 14th-ranked Mustangs their first GPAC loss of the year.

Concordia will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for a doubleheader against No. 23 Grand View University on Saturday, April 10. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
