Floor Wars — A Precursor to Spring Weekend

Throughout January, the Student Activities Council will host the first annual Winter Floor Wars, a competition between halls in four different events.

Winter Floors Wars was dreamed up by Director of Student Affairs Rehema Kavugha and the SAC co-chairs, Izaak Wendorff and Elyssia Finch. These battles of the halls will include a variety of activities that will test the halls in every way—physically, mentally, and creatively.

“It’s a sweet opportunity to get involved in something right after Christmas break before classes start heating up,” Wendorff said.

Floor Wars is intended to be a precursor to Spring Weekend.

Freshman Grace Aakre, a member of one of the competing halls, said she was “extremely excited” to be a part of everything.

The event will kick off with an Instagram challenge that starts Jan. 13. The halls will be able to submit pictures through Jan. 27, the last day of the Floor Wars, and the SAC members will choose the winners.

Halls will compete in a dodgeball tournament in the gym in the PE building at 8 p.m. on Jan. 15. The SAC members will referee.

A sledding competition will take place at 9 p.m. on Jan. 19 at the practice fields. Each hall will perform tricks and dress in a theme of their choosing. Faculty members will judge.

“[Faculty members will] mostly be judging the speed of the sledders and the quality of the costumes and themes that halls create!” Wendorff said.

If there is no snow, the teams will compete in a timed relay race instead of the sledding contest.

The Floor Wars’ final event will be a trivia night held in the Cattle Conference Room at 8 p.m. on Jan 22 with Director of Library Services Phil Henderickson emceeing and assigning points.

After Praise on Jan. 27, the closing ceremonies will be held in Weller Auditorium. The winners will be announced, and the champion hall will receive the “Golden Plunger.” As another incentive to pack the house for the closing ceremony, the theme for Spring Weekend will be announced at the end.
