Sigma Tau Delta held a poetry workshop on Saturday afternoon in Thom giving students an opportunity to learn about and practice new forms of poetry. Students were able to ask Assistant Professor of English Dr. Hannah Kroonblawd questions they have about poetry.
Senior Mi-Ree Zwick, who is a Sower reporter, serves as the president of Sigma Tau Delta and helped coordinate the event. Sigma Tau Delta is an honor society specifically for English majors.
“We wanted the workshops to have a guest, leader, professor, someone knowledgeable in the field that we’re going to be working on,” Zwick said.
Zwick said the event was inspired by a last-minute workshop event that took place last semester.
“I really liked the idea last year, so I wanted to do something more official this year,” Zwick said. “We really wanted to do a poetry reading night, but then we were told that April is actually poetry month, so we swapped that for a workshop.”
Senior Emma Higgins, a member of the writing club on campus, attended, seeking to expose herself to an unfamiliar form of writing.
“I don’t usually write poetry. I haven’t taken any poetry classes here at Concordia,” Higgins said. “So, it was a good opportunity for me to get to hear some of those maybe greater classifications and hear about new poetry that I didn’t know about.”
Higgins said she would be open to attending similar writing workshops in the future.
“I like the workshop style of thing because sometimes I need to hear other stuff and have a group setting to kind of think through things,” Higgins said.
