The Concordia University softball team played a doubleheader against the University of Saint Mary Spires Saturday afternoon. They lost the first game 9-0, but won the second 5-3.

The first game was a rout for Saint Mary. They fielded well and kept Concordia from having good hits that could get them on base. The Bulldogs only managed to have three hits in the whole game. Saint Mary scored at least once in every inning except the third, and ended the fifth inning with a whopping six runs.

There were two pitchers for Concordia in the first game: juniors Jerzi Rowe and Brooke Townsend. Rowe pitched for 4.1 innings and Townsend pitched for the rest of the game. Rowe had a 92-58 pitch-strike rate with eight hits, six runs and four strikeouts. Townsend meanwhile had three hits, three runs and zero strikeouts.

The second game went much better for the Bulldogs. They scored a run in both the first and second innings. They also kept the Spires scoreless until the fourth inning, where they allowed one run. Saint Mary also managed to score another run in the bottom of the fifth, which sent the game into extra innings.

Concordia had not scored in the game since the second inning, but broke their streak and pulled ahead in the sixth inning. Saint Mary responded with a run of their own, forcing the game into another inning. With two outs on the board, and two runners on second and third, sophomore Zoie Isom hit a double, allowing the Bulldogs to pull ahead. The Spires failed to match the extra runs, giving the win to Concordia.

Sophomore Megan Eurich was the sole pitcher for the second game. She had a 95-72 pitch-strike rate with six hits, two runs, and six strikeouts. The five runners for the day were sophomore Hanna Bowers, freshman Jayden Fernau, and juniors Caitlyn McGarvie, Julia Van Wey, and Creighton Taylor. Isom led the team in hits with three throughout the two games.

Softball is now 3-3 overall and plays again on Feb. 26 in a doubleheader against Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas The first game begins at noon with the second scheduled at 2 p.m.
