by Chris Johnstone

Concordia women’s tennis took advantage of its spring break by adding three wins and a loss to their season record.

The squad started the weekend on Saturday with a 5-4 loss against Bethel College in the Walz Fieldhouse.

In singles play, juniors Annie Horn and Katie Hertz and sophomore Katelinn Wurm picked up victories, while in doubles play, the tandem of Horn and freshman Kirsten Wagner won 8-6.

From there, the Bulldogs continued the series with a three-game win streak.

The Bulldogs traveled on Sunday to Hesston College and finished with a 9-0 victory.

Freshman Angela Bell was the only Bulldog to compete, as Hesston forfeited the other four single matches and all three doubles matches.

From Hesston, the Bulldogs traveled to Kansas and defeated Friends University 7-2.

In singles play, Horn, sophomore Kayla Smock, Hertz and Bell won in two sets. Wurm won in a single set to round out Concordia’s five singles wins.

In doubles action, the tandem of Horn and Wagner went 8-0. Sophomore Anna Kenney and freshman Lindee Schultz won 8-3.

The Bulldogs finished their stretch by playing Bethany College and winning 7-2, where Wagner and Smock won by default in singles play, and Horn and Hertz won in two games.

In doubles play, the Bulldogs won both matches as Horn and Wagner teamed up to win 8-4. The second match featured Smock and Wurm, who won 8-5 to give Concordia their seventh win of the day and secure the team victory.

Coach Joel Reckeway’s squad has now won their last four out of five matches heading into spring break. The team’s record, with the three wins of the series, has improved to 4-8.

The Bulldogs have plenty of down time as they wait to take on Nebraska Wesleyan University on Wednesday, March 29 in Lincoln. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
