ASL kicks off school year with fall-themed Sip and Sign event

ASL Club’s Sip and Sign event kicked off the school year, involving 10 participants who practiced ASL basics and fall-related signs at 6:30 on Thursday.
The event in J-top began with the group sitting in a circle and introducing themselves.
Junior Eunice Clausing, the ASL Club secretary and social media officer, taught the American Sign Language alphabet and how to ask for a person’s name.
Junior Katherine Seifferlein, the president of ASL Club, taught the attendees fall-related signs, which included squirrel, tree, fall, gloves, scarf, hat, candy, Halloween, and cloud.
The group also played a game like telephone with these new signs by signing the word in two chains, and the first chain to complete won.
Freshman Nikki Haack joined her first Sip and Sign event this year and enjoyed the community and learning involved.
“It is fun to brush up on my signing,” Haack said.
Sophomore Molly Cooper said that she liked the event’s theme and would love to participate in another event in the future.
She said, “The theme was relevant because of the season we are in, which made it fun and interesting.”
Seifferlein became the club president after participating in the club’s events last year, and said that she loved the way the group promotes learning ASL outside of classes and creates an encouraging culture for all levels of participants to practice their knowledge of ASL.
“The ASL club is a great way to meet other people with similar interests and learn beside others,” Seifferlein said.
ASL Club events range from a sip and sign to an ASL related movie night on the last Friday of each month, planned by Seifferlein, Clausing, and senior Grace Drews, who is the club’s is the vice president.
