High school students from Nebraska, Montana and Texas, as well as other states, came together with Concordia’s A Capella Choir to give a highly appreciated concert at St. John Lutheran Church on Friday afternoon.

Pastor Ryan Neuhaus, Executive Director at Camp Lone Star in Texas and the father of one of the Honor Choir students said, “I loved it.”

Neuhaus also commented that he was happy to be there for his son’s senior year at the concert.

Aaron Rohde, Concordia’s Church Worker Recruiter, said that “The variety of the music was outstanding; the musicianship was off the charts!” He loved the collaboration between the Concordia students and all the high school students.

“It was great to have a lot of people on campus,” Rohde. “We had two visit days because of the band and choir day and they were able to see the campus and talk to professors. This concert gives a reason for students of all ages to come and see a glimpse as to what Concordia and be for them; they can be part of music like this.”

People noticed how both the Honor Band and Honor Choir concerts took place not only in the same week, but one day after the other.

“Having the two dates back-to-back really opened the door for these kids that really wanted to be part of both, to be able to do that no matter if they lived nearby or far away,” Rohde said.

He explained that often high school students would have to pick either the band or the choir concert to be part of since they were on different weeks and depending on how far away they lived. This year’s schedule changed that problem for students.

Junior Vivian Marshall, a Soprano I in the A Capella Choir, said, “I thought the concert was a lot of fun! We put a lot of work into it, and I think it came out really good.”

A fan favorite at the concert was the A Capella song, “Elijah Rock” a traditional African American spiritual. Marshall stated that although the song proved to be challenging to learn and a “learning curve”, it was also her favorite song to sing.
