Home Sports Bulldog Volleyball Suffers from Injuries in Hastings Loss

by Chris Johnstone

The Concordia volleyball team lost 3-1 to the No. 4 Hastings College Broncos on Wednesday, Sept. 28, on the Broncos’ home court.

The Bulldogs struggled in the first two sets, losing 11-25 in both, but geared up in the third set, scoring a win of 25-22. However, the fourth set went to the Broncos for 25-21.

Senior right side Tiegen Skains led the charge for the Bulldogs with 13 kills in the match, but it was not enough to stop the Broncos’ win.

With key players missing due to injury, including senior setter Alayna Kavanaugh, junior middle Annie Friesen and freshman middle Emmie Noyd, the Bulldogs were already at a disadvantage.

“A lot of girls have stepped up and filled those positions,” Skains said. “But we just haven’t had a ton of time in our busy schedule to get into a rhythm with our new rotations quite yet. Hastings is a great team and they are coached really well, not to mention they returned almost every player from last year. We are in the middle of all kinds of changes, which makes it hard to get a win against No. 4 in the country.”

This is not the Bulldogs’ last chance at a victory against the Broncos, as Hastings will make a trip to Seward in November.

The Bulldogs, now 2-4 in GPAC and 10-10 overall, will be back on the court at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1 to take on Briar Cliff University in the Walz Arena.
