Home Sports Bulldogs Fall to Mustangs at Morningside Homecoming Game

by Clyde Ericson

The Concordia football team (3-2) traveled to Sioux City, Iowa, on Oct. 1 to play the No. 6 Morningside College Mustangs. This was Concordia’s second straight game versus a top 10 rated opponent after playing Doane last week. The game was Morningside’s homecoming game and resulted in a 55-13 loss for the Bulldogs.

Emotions were flying early in the first quarter as junior Tarence Roby ran a 99 yard kickoff return that would have tied the game 7-7 if it were not for a holding call that cancelled the touchdown. From then on, Morningside only needed 54 yards of offense to gain a 24-0 lead in the first quarter. This included two interceptions by senior TJ Austin for touchdowns by Morningside’s secondary.

By the end of the third quarter Concordia had found a rhythm as sophomore Riley Wiltfong connected with senior Deshawn Eure for a 14-yard touchdown. On the next possession, the Bulldogs drove 70 yards on eight plays to set up a seven yard touchdown run by Wiltfong with 2:33 left to play. This caused a final score of 55-13.

Senior Bryce Collins ran for 78 yards and reached 3,000 career rushing yards which made him one of three players to do so in Concordia Nebraska history. Wiltfong threw for 134 passing yards with a rushing and passing touchdown. Sophomore Josh Davis subbed in at tight end for injured senior Cameron Christiansen and had 43 receiving yards on two catches.

The Bulldogs will celebrate homecoming next week and play (1-3) Briar Cliff at 1 p.m.
