Home Sports Bulldogs Win Three Sets Against St. Mary

by Julia O’Laughlin

The Bulldog volleyball team took on the St. Mary Flames on Wednesday, Sept. 14, defeating them in three sets. The Bulldogs had some trouble in the back row in the first set with the absence of freshman defensive specialist Jenna Eller. However Concordia finished strong and won 25-18.

The momentum from the first set carried over to the second set as the Bulldogs came out to a 7-1 lead. The offense picked up speed and overwhelmed St. Mary’s defense for much of the game. However, the Flames started making a comeback mid-game, coming within two points of the Bulldogs. Concordia managed to pull through, finishing off the set with a kill by senior hitter Paige Getz. The score was 25-20.

Set three was an even match all the way through, despite Concordia’s offense being faster than St. Mary’s defense. The back row for the Bulldog’s slowed down, and the Flames took advantage of it. Concordia’s hitters picked it up towards the end of the set to finish off the Flames with a score of 25-21.

Senior hitter Tiegen Skains led all hitters for Concordia with 12 kills. Senior setter Alayna Kavanaugh added 42 assists, and junior libero Jocelyn Garcia had 20 digs. The Bulldogs next home game is Saturday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m.
