The Bulldogs for Life Club at Concordia recently attended the Nebraska Walk for Life put on by the Nebraska Right to Life Organization.

The first event of the day was held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln. They had some members of the Nebraska State Legislature talk about their views on the pro-life issue and about how members of the community can support their cause. Afterwards a service was held.

After the service, it was time for the walk to start. Enduring temperatures of around 19 degrees, pro-life supporters gathered in front of the capitol building to hear a few speakers before the march began. This included Nebraska Gov. Pete Rickets, who notably talked about a new bill, LB 814, that would ban a practice named “dismemberment abortion.” Balloons were released to represent lives lost to abortion.

“It’s really encouraging to see our governor and  a lot of politicians there,” sophomore and Bulldogs for Life Social media Manager Olivia Proctor said. “It’s not just us … there’s actually people with political influence … what we’re fighting for might actually happen.”

The walk began at the capitol building and ended at the campus of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The group that had met at Trinity Lutheran Church, which included the Bulldogs for Life, stuck together and were denoted by their matching green beanies that said “The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod” on the front. The entire group sang hymns all the way to UNL’s campus.

Along the way to the campus of UNL the were some counter protesters that moved along with the pro-life suporters. Lincoln Police Department was on the scene ensure that protestors on both sides remained peaceful.

“I heard them yelling and I’ve been to a fair amount of these events before so I knew what was going on but for me that just encouraged me to sing louder and so I was singing so loudly I couldn’t even hear the other people singing around me … I was in the moment,” sophomore and Bulldogs for Life President Joanna Sherrill said.

Once they reached UNL’s campus,  there were a few notable speakers before the keynote speaker which included Senator Ben Sasse and Lt. Gov. Mike Foley. The keynote speakers, Jeff and Jennifer Kristie, talked about their experience keeping the baby who resulted from a sexual assault on Jennifer Kristie while she was traveling for her job as a sign language interpreter.

“Her story really kind of proved that it doesn’t matter … what circumstances surrounded your conception … your worth just as much as any other person,” Proctor said.

The Walk for Life is one of many pro-life events that Bulldogs for Life attend. The next event they will attend will be the March for Life in Washington, D.C.  on Jan. 24.

“We support life because all of us have value … because of Jesus dying for our sins,” sophomore and Bulldogs for Life Secretary Carter Thorman said.
