Home News Bulldogs for the Unborn Attend Thousand-Strong Walk for Life

by Benjamin Middendorf

Bulldogs for the Unborn is a student group with 15 active members who work to raise awareness about alternatives to abortion and provide resources for pregnant mothers. One of their recent activities was taking part in Lincoln’s Walk for Life on Jan. 30.

“It really impressed me how many people were there from all sorts of denominations,” said sophomore Grace Woelmer, president of the club. “There were old people and there were young people—a lot of little kids.”

According to Bulldogs for the Unborn members, over 1,000 people from all over Nebraska, including 30 Concordia students, marched for seven blocks in Lincoln before listening to former Planned Parenthood manager Sue Thayer give a speech.

This event was both Woelmer and freshman Isaiah Armbrecht’s first pro-life demonstration.

“There were some protesters protesting our protest,” Armbrecht said. “But I don’t think any harm was done, and that was a good way to show that life matters. Even their life matters, even though they don’t want to think that.”

During the rest of the year, the club runs several diaper drives, collecting diapers, clothing and other items from local business and Seward residents to donate to the Pregnancy Center in Lincoln.

In addition to community participation, the club also hosts speakers to raise pro-life awareness, including a coordinator of Students for Life of America and the manager of a pregnancy center in Lincoln. On Feb. 28, former president of Lutherans for Life Dr. James Lamb will give a presentation.

“We’re not just saying we’re pro-life and then not caring,” sophomore Lindsay Sampson said. “We actually pray for the women who struggle with pregnancy, we care for them physically, we care for the organizations involved.”

Bulldogs for the Unborn was founded in fall of 2014 by students who had attended the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C.

The club hopes to send students to the March for Life in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 27, 2017.

Along with diaper drives, the guest speaker in February and hopefully sending students to the March for Life, Bulldogs for the Unborn holds meetings once a month.

“Life is a great gift, and so I’m very passionate about the issue of abortion,” Woelmer said. “I really want to make it known to other people and make them realize that life is important.”

“It’s more than just a club,” Sampson said. “I feel like we actually do something, we actually contribute… Bulldogs for the Unborn is definitely making a difference in its small, Christian college community.”
