A 95-point thriller in Sioux City, Iowa, went the way of the Concordia University football team on Oct. 4 as the Bulldogs bested Mount Marty 52-43.

An efficient offensive first half had the Bulldogs comfortably leading 17-7 at the midway break. Senior defensive back Daylon Henson scooped up and ran in a fumble in the first quarter, junior Peyton Atwood stayed consistent with his field-goal kicking with a 34-yard kick, and senior quarterback Gideon Stark ran in the final touchdown of the half.

The Bulldogs extended the lead to 31-7 early in the third quarter with touchdown passes to senior Max Bartels and junior Jonny Puelz.

Despite being down by 24 points, the Mount Marty did not roll over. The Lancers scored four unanswered touchdowns to take the lead 35-31 and threaten Concordia’s eight-game win streak.

The loss of the lead seems to have inspired the Bulldog offense to respond, as a Stark pass to Puelz put the Bulldogs back in front just two minutes later.

Junior running back Carlos Collazo was finally rewarded with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter for his record-setting effort. Collazo rushed for 283 yards on 39 attempts and sealed the game with two late touchdowns.

Concordia leaned on Collazo throughout the game, as he personally had 63 percent of Concordia’s 448 yards of offense. His 283 yards bested the previous Concordia rushing yards in a game record by 17 and more than doubled Collazo’s career best.

Stark was no slouch either as he passed for 160 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Seniors Dylan Meyer and Jacob Rolen lead the Bulldogs with 13 and 12 tackles, respectively.

The win moves the Bulldogs up to 4-0 on the season. The next game is homecoming weekend on Oct. 11 vs. 2-3 Midland. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
