Home Sports Concordia Football Scores 10th Win Against Briar Cliff

by Clyde Ericson

The Concordia football team (4-2) welcomed homecoming as an opportunity to re-energize its season after two losses and beat Briar Cliff for the 10th time in a row with a final score of 56-0.

Less than four minutes into the game, sophomore Riley Wiltfong threw a four-yard touchdown pass to senior Erik Small. It was the eighth play of a 59-yard drive. By the end of the first half, the score was 35-0, and junior Jared Garcia found himself moving up in the record books. Garcia’s 25th touchdown grab broke Concordia’s record for career touchdown catches previously held by Ross Wurdeman.

Concordia’s defense also did a stellar job as it shut out the charges. Senior Trey Barnes had 11 tackles (three for a loss) and a sack. Briar Cliff only threw the ball three times throughout the entire game and did not complete a single pass. One of the three passes was intercepted by junior D’Mauria Martin.

Senior Bryce Collins led all rushers with 101 yards on 16 carries. Wiltfong threw for 123 yards and three touchdowns. Senior TJ Austin threw for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Garcia had 136 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

“I thought we played well, this is the best we’ve played even though Briar Cliff was dealing with injuries,” coach Vance Winter said. “We came out and executed. I think we only had one penalty the entire game, took care of the football and did a good job. I’m really pleased with the effort today and how we responded to all the adversity this week.”

Next weekend the Bulldogs will be traveling all the way up to Mitchell, South Dakota, to play No. 16 Dakota Wesleyan who is also 4-2. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m.
