Home Sports Concordia Softball Earns Doubleheader Split with Walk-off in Game One

by Garrett Suchanek

The Concordia softball team started off the new month by splitting its doubleheader against Briar Cliff. The Bulldogs are now 18-7 overall and 3-3 in GPAC.

In game one, Concordia used late-game heroics to capture an exciting 5-4 win in nine innings.

Each team posted a run in their half of the seventh inning to make it a 4-4 game to send the game to extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth inning, the Chargers took the plate in the top of the ninth. Sophomore Michaela Woodward took the mound for her ninth inning of work and kept the Chargers off of the scoreboard. In the bottom half of the ninth inning, Woodward complemented her pitching with a big base hit. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Woodward drove in the game-winning run to give the Bulldogs the win.

In game two, the Bulldogs were unable to come out on top. The Chargers scored in each of the first four innings to gain a 6-0 advantage. Concordia tacked on three runs in the fifth inning, but that was all for the Bulldogs as Briar Cliff won 6-3.

Concordia will take the field again on Tuesday, April 5 when the Bulldogs face Hastings College at home. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
