Home Sports Concordia Volleyball Takes Day Two of Bulldog Bash

By Julia O’Laughlin

The Concordia volleyball team started day two of the Bulldog Bash tournament playing Lindenwood University bright and early Saturday morning, Sept. 3.

The Bulldogs quick offense and consistent defense proved too much for the Lady Lynx in the first set as Concordia went on to win 25-11.

The second set was more of a challenge for the Bulldogs. Lindenwood came alive with a much improved defense and they took advantage of Concordia service errors to hold the lead for much of the game. However the Bulldogs rallied back for the win with a score of 25-22.

The third set was a setback for  the Bulldogs. It was a close match that ultimately ended with a Lynx victory. Concordia was once again plagued with service errors but added a messy defense to the mix, which led to a win for Lindenwood, 25-21.

Set four started out well for the Bulldogs when they pulled out to a five point lead that was extended to 10 with the help of freshman Jenna Eller and her service aces. Concordia continued to show off their superior offense and went on to win 25-11.

The Bulldogs outhit the Lynx with 55 kills to Lindenwood’s 32. Senior Paige Getz led the way in kills for Concordia with 14 and junior Jocelyn Garcia led all defensive specialists in digs with 19.

The Bulldogs took on the York College Panthers twelve hours later. Concordia was the ultimate victor in three sets.

The first started out with a quick Concordia offense tearing holes in the Panther’s defense. The set ended with senior setter Alayna Kavanaugh dumping a set in the center of the Panther’s court for the final kill and Concordia won 25-14.

Set two was another easy win for Concordia. The Bulldogs started out where they left off with another kill. York’s defense could not keep up with the Bulldogs, who kept up their attack on offense and won it 25-9.

Set three was a messy one for both teams. Both the Bulldogs and the Panthers hit the ball out of bounds and missed serves. Concordia’s offense slowed down, which the Panthers took advantage of by pulling within four points of Concordia. However, the Bulldogs pushed through and finished off the Panthers with a score of 25-19.

Eller once again came through for Concordia with six service aces. Getz also led all hitters with 13 kills, and Kavanaugh added 33 assists.

The Bulldogs move to 5-6 on the season, with a 1-6 GPAC record. Concordia will play Wednesday, Sept. 7, traveling to Benedictine College in Atchison, KS.
