Home Sports Getz Gets 1,000 Kills

by Julia O’Laughlin

Senior outside hitter Paige Getz reached a milestone in her volleyball career on Aug. 27 at the Big Sky Volleyball Challenge in Butte, Montana.

With her friends and family watching, she reached 1,000 kills as a college player.

“I knew that I was close from the beginning of the season,” Getz said. “I think I had 64 (kills) to go, so we tried to figure out if it would be in Montana or in Nebraska somewhere.”

As it turned out, Getz got her 1,000th kill in Montana playing against Eastern Oregon University.

“I knew that I only had three to go going into that match,” Getz said. “I was hoping it wasn’t just a tip kill or something like that, but it was a good hit.”

As the rest of the team began screaming and cheering, the fans echoed their applause.

But there was no stopping the match, and the Bulldogs ended up losing in three sets.

Originally from Paola, Kansas, Getz has been playing volleyball for Concordia since her freshman year. She was originally going to attend Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, but the Concordia volleyball coach and a visit to campus persuaded her otherwise.

Getz also participated in track the first two years at Concordia and went back and forth between the two sports until she ultimately decided to stick with volleyball.

Getz’s teammate, senior setter Alayna Kavanaugh described Getz as easy going but ready to put the ball down.

“She works really hard and she deserves it,” Kavanaugh said. “I’m just really happy for her.”

“I’m ready for (the ball),” Getz said. “Coach talks about having confidence and wanting it, but I also trust my teammates in their ability to put the ball away.”

Getz will continue her domination on the volleyball court when the Bulldogs play against the Morningside College Mustangs at home at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.
