Haynes rescues a draw against Kansas Wesleyan

The Concordia women’s soccer team salvaged a late draw against Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas, on Wednesday thanks to a last-minute goal from sophomore Abby Haynes.
Kansas Wesleyan opened the scoring in the 29th minute of the first half, putting the Bulldogs behind for most of the match. With just one minute remaining in regulation, sophomore forward Abby Haynes found the back of the net, scoring the equalizer after receiving an assist from fellow sophomore forward Guadalupe Sanchez. The late goal secured a huge road draw for the Bulldogs and capped off a tremendous fight until the final whistle.
The Bulldogs’ defense was busy throughout the afternoon at JRI Stadium as the Coyotes recorded 13 total shots, with three on target. The Coyotes also held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-2, while Concordia committed four fouls compared to nine by Kansas Wesleyan.
Bulldog goalkeeper Aaliyah Matthews, a sophomore, had a solid performance between the posts. Matthews played all 90 minutes and recorded two saves on the Coyotes’ three shots on goal.
With the result, the Bulldogs move to 0-2-2 on the season.
Next up, Concordia returns home for a very special day at Bulldog Stadium. On Saturday, Sept. 12, the Bulldogs will host Dakota State University at 1:00 pm for their final non-conference match of the season.
It will also be Senior Day, a special celebration for seniors: Grady Smith, Joey Long, Abigail Allen, Sadie Mares, Olivia Pyle, Olivia Kohl, and Camryn Higer.
Following Senior Day, the Bulldogs will begin Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Sept. 19 at 2:00 pm, traveling to Sioux Center, Iowa, to face Dordt University.
