Home Sports Men’s Golf Finishes Second at Blue River Classic

The Concordia men’s golf team finished runner up at the two-day Blue River Classic tournament co-hosted by Doane and Concordia Sept. 20 and 21. Fifteen teams, including seven GPAC teams, participated in the tournament, which took place at the Wilderness Ridge and Highlands golf courses in Lincoln.

During round one, Concordia shot a 305 for a spot in fourth place in the team standings. Sophomore Nolan Zikas led the team with a 73, and freshman Tyler Samek shot a 74. Also in the top five for the Bulldogs were seniors Jared Knoepfel and Reid Wiebe, both with a 79, and Russell Otten shooting an 85.

On day two, the Bulldogs dropped their team total to a 288 for second place for the day and also throughout the tournament. The Bulldogs finished in second, 10 strokes behind Southeast Community College and eight strokes ahead of third place Morningside College.

Wiebe dropped 11 strokes off his round to shoot a 68 during day two and lead Concordia. Zikas dropped his total to a 71 for the round, and Otten tallied a 74. Samek shot a 75 and Knoepfel shot another 79.

Concordia finished with a team score of 593 to break the previous school record as a team on 18 holes.

Zikas finished second overall, finishing one stroke behind the champion from Southeast Community College. Also in the top 10 was Wiebe with a tie for fifth and Samek with a tie for eighth place overall.

The season continues for the team with the GPAC fall tournament on Oct. 3 and 4 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
