Home Sports Men’s Soccer Returns to Hastings Stadium with Tie and Victory

By Jordan McCoy

The Concordia men’s soccer team played Lyon College (No. 24) on Friday night, and Georgia Gwinnet College on Saturday night, at Hastings College. The last time the Bulldogs were in the Hastings stadium, they celebrated their 2015 GPAC tournament win.

The game against Lyon resulted in a 0-0 tie after double overtime. The game was frustrating due to several lightning delays which forced the players indoors for more than an hour. Because of the rainy conditions and wet field, only 19 total shots were taken in the game. Concordia outshot Lyon 12-7. Junior Marcelo Hernandez led the team with five shots, three on goal.

During this game, head coach Jason Weides switched up the Bulldogs’ back line, putting former forward junior Toby Down at center back. Although they were hoping for a win, the draw was still a good result according to senior Mark Horsburgh.

“They’re a good team and Graceland is a good team,” Horsburgh said. “And we played with both of them.”

The Bulldogs finished their weekend out with a strong 1-0 win against Georgia Gwinnet College. Although the lineup changed again, the Bulldogs were unbeatable on the back line as they kept Georgia Gwinnet to a single shot on goal. Since they had just played 110 minutes of soccer on Friday, head coach Jason Weides used his bench more than usual with 18 Bulldogs seeing action.

The game stayed tied at 0-0 until the 85th minute when freshman Carlos Ferrer finished the game out with a goal assisted by junior Micah Lehenbauer. Each team had 11 shots. Junior Lewis Rathbone led the Bulldogs with three shots.

The Bulldogs now have more than a week to rest and recover before they travel to Lincoln to play Nebraska Wesleyan. They will take on the Prairie Wolves on Monday, Sept. 19th at 7pm.
