Student Senate Vice President Quinlan Hendrickson said at Tuesday’s meeting that the officers raised student concerns about dorm bathroom cleanliness in a meeting with the Student Life Office and Chief Financial Officer Dave Kumm.
He said that a student at a previous Senate meeting complained that dorm shower curtains were unclean or not wide enough to fit the shower, so the Senate officers mentioned the issue to SLO.
Hendrickson said SLO told him that the janitorial staff would wash the shower curtains and continue to wash them regularly. He encouraged students to keep an eye on the shower curtains and overall bathroom cleanliness to “let us know if you’re seeing it go downhill again.”
Secretary Kayla Korb also said that students could bring complaints about dorm bathroom cleanliness to their Resident Assistants, who can file work orders with Buildings and Grounds or communicate with SLO.
“Bekah (Freed) said she doesn’t want the students living in filth because that’s just disgusting, so if you guys see something, you’ve got to let your RA know and they will probably tell people,” Korb said.
Hendrickson said SLO wants janitorial staff to make sure the bathrooms are cleaned properly.
“[SLO] told us, if they come, clean, and you go in five minutes later and find something that’s gross and disgusting, you can call them to come back and clean it,” he said. “That’s something that they’re trying to push.”
The Senate’s Physical Campus Committee, led by Treasurer Emma VanTol, also proposed a renovation project to add signage around campus.
Hendrickson said the project would include signs for the outdoor chapel behind David Hall, the “hammock village” next to Jonathan Hall, and grills around campus. He also said the Senate would make signs advertising the amenities like hammocks and yard games that students can check out for free from SLO.
Senate Treasurer Emma VanTol said she also noticed there were no signs visible from the Quad for the Borland Center for Music and Theatre, the Dunklau Center for Science, Math and Business, or Brommer Hall. She said she would bring up the lack of signage at the officers’ next meeting with Kumm.
“Dunklau, to me, doesn’t seem like as big a deal, but Brommer just says “Art” on the window and Borland is so new that I think we need a sign out there,” VanTol said. “We’ll just be giving that information back to Dave and seeing what he says.”
