Volleyball wins away in South Dakota

Concordia volleyball took a 3-0 win over Mount Marty on Wednesday, Sept. 16. The No. 2-ranked Bulldogs got the sweep in their third Great Plains Athletic Conference match of the season.
Concordia had a total of 46 kills across the three sets, far ahead of Mount Marty’s total of 29. Junior Shandy Fa’ali’i, with 16 total kills, had the most in the game, with senior Bella Hedke and sophomore Makenna Starkey following with eight and seven, respectively.
Concordia’s win came after hard-fought sets throughout the game. The Bulldogs started off strong in the first set, but the Lancers stayed close behind. Concordia moved ahead with a win in the first set with a score of 25-19. Concordia had 18 kills in the first set alone, with six from standout player Fa’ali’i.
The second set started slower for the Bulldogs as they were unable to hold a lead. Mount Marty took a mid-set lead after a four-point run. However, Concordia came back to win 26-24 thanks to a couple of late attacking errors from the Lancers. Laynee Baker, a sophomore, had four kills in set two.
The third set was close throughout, with the Bulldogs overcoming an early disadvantage to win with a decisive 25-21. Fa’ali’i continued to shine against the Lancers with seven kills in the third set.
Concordia hopes to continue its six-game winning streak at home later this week on Sept. 19 against Hastings College.
