Home Sports Ways to Stay Active at Concordia Other Than Sports

by Jacy Johnston

Students at Concordia have many opportunities to stay active and participate in the Bulldog athletic community both on campus and off.

This year, student athletes make up 52 percent of the Concordia student body with around 620 athletes on campus. Concordia offers 20 varsity NAIA men’s and women’s programs for students to be involved in. All Concordia students have free access to all Greater Plains Athletic Conference events. The Concordia Invitational Tournament on Jan. 27-28 is a highlight of the home events for the year. A full schedule of Bulldog athletic events can be found here.

In addition to participating in NAIA athletics, students have the opportunity to choose between over 20 different  intramural teams on campus, including sand volleyball, basketball and ultimate frisbee. A schedule of intramural events can be found here for more information.

If you want to work out on campus, Walz Human Performance Complex is the place to go. Walz contains a 200-meter indoor track along with a multipurpose infield. Down the stairs from the fieldhouse is the weight room. The track, infield and weight room are all open to Concordia students. Further information including hours for the facilities can be found here.

Seward also provides great off-campus opportunities to stay active in during the year. The city has 11 parks throughout the city, including a skate park and a seasonal campground. For those interested in golfing, the Seward Community Golf Course is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

An 18-hole disc golf course is located along the Plum Creek Trail as a part of the Plum Creek Sports Complex. Plum Creek Trail is a paved 2.7 mile trail that runs along the edge of campus. It is a great place to walk, jog or ride a bike. On the north end of the trail is Plum Creek Park, which has a sand volleyball court, an outdoor basketball court, and baseball and softball fields. More Seward recreation opportunities can be found here.

If you feel like venturing out of Seward, Branched Oak State Recreation Area is less than a half hour down the road. Click here to learn more. Also a short drive away is Lincoln, home to sports galore. Look for events to watch at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln or go to one of the three YMCAs in the state’s capital.

While not everyone here is a student athlete, there is an activity at Concordia for everyone wanting to stay physically active and involved in sports and fitness. I hope you get a chance to check out some of these cool activities this school year!
