Link Library’s midnight closing time to be reinstated, Senate says

The hours for Concordia’s Link Library have been extended to midnight five days a week, replacing a 10 p.m. closing time instituted at the start of the fall semester due to budget cuts, Student Senate officers announced at Tuesday’s meeting.

Treasurer Emma Kettelhake said that Senate officers brought student concerns about the shortened building hours to the attention of Concordia’s administration, including Chief Financial Officer Morganne Schreiner and Chief Operating Officer Kim Boyce.

“We went to the CFO and stuff and Kim Boyce, and we said, ‘Hey, this is not good,’ and then they found some more money,” she said. “They realloted some stuff so that would work out better.”

The new hours for Link Library are: Monday-Thursday, 7:45 a.m. to midnight; Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 2 p.m. to midnight.

President Quinlan Hendrickson said that budget cuts and limited funding for student workers were the causes of the reduced library hours earlier this semester.

Student Senate officers said their goal is to bring student concerns to the people in charge.

For example, Buildings and Grounds workers trimmed the low-hanging tree branches over the sidewalk between Dorcas Hall and the Janzow Campus Center, thanks to a request last week by a Senate representative, which Senate officers brought to Schreiner and Boyce.

Vice President Ramona Ojeda also said the Senate is working with higher-ups to address the fact that there are only two washers and two dryers in Dorcas Hall, which houses around 90 students.
