The Bulldogs wrestling team was crowned regular season champions of the Great Plains Athletics Conference in front of their home crowd Thursday night following victories over Dakota Wesleyan University and York College.

This is the second year in a row that the Bulldogs claimed at least a share of the title. Coach Levi Calhoun, in just his second year, brought the Bulldogs back to an undefeated record in the conference for the first time since the 2016-2017 season. The Bulldogs, now finished with their conference schedule, will be the only team to do so this season.

The Bulldogs clinched the title after defeating the outnumbered Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan University 48-4. Six of the 10 matches went down as forfeits due to the Tigers’ small five-man roster. Bulldogs that picked up wins from the dual included Jason Watkins, Gabriel Crawford, and Giancarlo Facio.

Marcus Urban picked up the only points for the Tigers with a 13-2 defeat of Issiah Burks in the 165 weight class. That would be the only highlight for the Tigers, as they remain without a dual victory this season. The team will get two more chances to break into the win column against the University of Jamestown and Doane before competing at the GPAC championships.

The Bulldogs also picked up a big non-conference victory over York College. After falling behind 13-0 in the first three matches, Cameron Devers set the mood for the rest of the dual by earning a pin for the Bulldogs in just one minute. The team would not slow down from there, as it went off for 24 unanswered points and won six of the last seven matches. Demitrius Miller sealed the win for Concordia with a first round pinfall, making the final score 30-16.

The Bulldogs will travel this weekend to Iowa for the Morningside College Sioux City Open this Saturday.
