Concordia’s office of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Relations and the Student Activities Council recently partnered to host a dinner and movie event for the Seward community in celebration of Concordia’s 125th anniversary.

Concordia students, faculty, alumni and members of the Seward community gathered on the evening of Friday, Aug. 24 to enjoy dinner from several local food trucks and an outdoor screening of Disney Pixar’s “Coco.”

Food trucks included the Stur 22 Lounge, which offered a sample of African and Caribbean food; FlyDogz, whose gourmet hot dogs were recently named the best in Nebraska by People magazine; and Rita’s Italian Ice, which offered both Italian ice and frozen custard.

“The food, when I got there, was very good,” senior Faith Hanson said. “I was given a big portion; the people were very nice. It was quick; it was efficient. Some of the best barbecue I’ve had in awhile.”

Hanson was referring to the Kansas City-style barbeque of Homerun BBQ, a business from Milford, Nebraska, which serves sandwiches whose buns are designed to look like baseballs.

As the evening began to wind down, students and community members began to set out chairs and blankets and settle down to watch the movie.

It was clear that the showing brought out a range of emotions in viewers, with members of the audience clapping together loudly at certain parts and even crying at others.

“I really enjoyed the event. It felt like it just brought the whole community together,” senior Emma Heidorn said. “There were kids, there were adults, and just a bunch of people that I’d never seen before. It was cool to see everybody (come) together to eat food and watch a movie.”
