Home News CUNE, Concordia Chicago seek to continue CIT

Concordia University, Nebraska and Concordia University Chicago announced they would collaborate to seek the continuation of the Concordia Invitational Tournament, according to a statement released on Feb. 6.

Details about continuing the college basketball tournament have not been announced, but Bull said there will be a one-year break for planning during the 2025-2026 academic year.

“Concordia University, Nebraska is delighted to partner with Concordia University Chicago to continue the 75-year legacy of CIT,” said President Bernard Bull. “While we plan to take a one-year break to prepare for the future of CIT, by God’s grace we look forward to bringing the event back for the 2026-2027 academic year.”

The announcement states that CUNE and CUC are considering “rotating CIT between Chicago, Seward and possibly a third location that has a large population of Concordia Nebraska and Concordia Chicago alumni.”

The CIT basketball tournament dates back to 1951, and CUNE and CUC are original members. From 2002 to 2025, the tournament involved men’s and women’s teams from four Concordia universities: Nebraska, Chicago, Ann Arbor, and Wisconsin.

Concordia University Wisconsin and Ann Arbor announced that the joint university would discontinue participation in CIT after the 2025 tournament, which concluded on Jan. 26.
