Home Sports Dakota Wesleyan Sweeps Concordia Softball

by Garrett Suchanek

Saturday afternoon the Concordia softball team suffered its first sweep of the season when Dakota Wesleyan University defeated the Bulldogs 12-2 and 12-0. The Bulldogs fell to 26-13 on the year and 7-7 in GPAC.

In both games the Tigers won by the mercy rule in five innings. In the opening game, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a two-run home run by sophomore Michaela Woodward. However, the lead was short-lived, and in the top of the second inning the Tigers scored three runs to take the lead. Dakota Wesleyan continued with a flurry of runs by scoring one in the third, three in the fourth and five in the fifth inning. The Bulldogs were unable to score any more runs in the game.

In the second game, the Bulldogs couldn’t contain the Tigers’ offense. The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning and added a fourth run in the second inning. After being held scoreless in the third inning, Dakota Wesleyan scratched a pair of runs across in the fourth inning before blowing the game open with a six-run fifth inning.

Concordia failed to score and only recorded two hits. Junior Kylie Harpst had a double in the third inning and sophomore Autumn Owens had a single in the fourth inning.

Concordia will look to bounce back when the Bulldogs take on York College for a doubleheader on Monday, April 18. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
