Home Sports Men’s Basketball Defeats Morningside in OT

by Garrett Suchanek

After dropping its first conference game earlier this week, the Concordia men’s basketball team rebounded with a 110-99 win in overtime at home. The win improved the Bulldogs to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in GPAC.

Concordia held a halftime lead of 46-38, but shortly into the second half, that lead was gone. Despite seeing their lead evaporate, the Bulldogs put together a series of defensive stops and key shots to give Concordia a 70-58 advantage.

However, the Mustangs wouldn’t go quietly. Morningside responded with a 16-3 run to take a 74-73 lead with just under six minutes to go.

After going back and forth, the Bulldogs had gained a five-point lead with 25 seconds left in regulation. After a bucket by the Mustangs, the Bulldogs found themselves at the free throw line for a pair of shots. Both shots rimmed out, and on the following trip down the floor the Mustangs buried a three-pointer to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Once overtime started, the Bulldogs flexed their muscles and went on an 11-2 run to open up the game. From that point on, Concordia strolled to an 11-point win.

The Bulldogs had five players score in double figures. Senior Jamie Pearson led the way with 31 points. Junior Eli Ziegler splashed in six three-pointers on his way to 21 points. Seniors Robby Thomas and Micah Kohlwey finished with 16 and 11 points respectively. Junior Max Wegener also chipped in 12 points.

Concordia will look to add another win to its record when the team takes on Doane College in Crete at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24.
