by Garrett Suchanek

Friday afternoon the Concordia men’s tennis team improved its record to 3-4 on the year with a 5-4 win over Southwestern College.

The Bulldogs came back following a pair of losses in doubles play. Concordia won the first doubles match with Willy Pardos and Javier Moreno 8-2 but dropped the next two matches 8-6 and 8-4.

In singles play, Concordia needed to win at least four of the five matches to earn the victory, and the Bulldogs did just that.

Pardos started singles play with a sweep of his opponent 6-1 and 6-2. Freshman Thomas Greeff battled hard in the No. 2 spot, but fell in three sets 6-4, 3-6 and 12-11. With the score sitting 3-2 in favor of the Moundbuilders, the Bulldogs needed to win three of the next four matches.

Concordia’s No. 3, 4 and 5 spots all picked up wins to claim the victory. Moreno filled the No. 3 spot and won an exciting three-set match 7-6, 3-6 and 12-10. Junior Patricio Esquivel also won in three sets 6-4, 6-7 and 7-5 to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead. In the No. 5 spot, freshman Gabriel Poling swept Logan Bevis 6-2 and 6-2 to give the Bulldogs the win.

Concordia will be back in action next week when the Bulldogs take on Tabor College at 1 p.m. in Lincoln.
