by Garrett Suchanek

After taking a break for Christmas, the No. 14 Concordia women’s basketball team hit the court again Tuesday night. The Bulldogs traveled to California to play a pair of games and opened their trip with an 81-61 win against Simpson University.

Concordia (9-3, 5-3) showed no ill effects from the time off as they sprinted out to an 8-2 lead early in the first quarter. After allowing the Red Hawks to claw back into the game, the Bulldogs ended the first quarter on a 15-4 run to lead 25-12.

In the second quarter, the Red Hawks couldn’t climb back into the game, and the Bulldogs held a comfortable 12-point lead for most of the quarter. At the half, the Bulldogs led 37-25.

The Red Hawks made it a close game early in the third quarter and trailed by six points. However, the Bulldogs responded with timely buckets to push the lead back to double digits.

In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs put the game out of reach and finished the game on a 21-8 run.

Concordia had four Bulldogs finish in double figures for points. Sophomore Brenleigh Daum and senior Becky Mueller combined for 39 points and nine 3-pointers. Freshman Quinn Wragge and sophomore Mary Janovich chipped in 15 and 13 points respectively.

The Bulldogs will play one more game before making the trip back to Nebraska. Concordia will face Pacific Union College at 4 p.m. Central Standard Time on Wednesday, Dec. 30.
