The seventh-ranked Concordia Bulldogs traveled North to Yankton, South Dakota Wednesday night and handily defeated the middling Mount Marty Lancers by a score of 77-57.
Concordia came into the game desperate for a win. Despite boasting a 7-1 record on the season and a 5-1 record in conference play, the Bulldogs were in danger of beginning a losing streak as Jamestown University had upset the nationally ranked offensive powerhouse at home last time out, holding the Concordia offense to a modest 61 points.
Much like the bout against the Jimmies the first two frames of the Lancers contest didn’t quite set the world on fire offensively. Namely, Concordia’s early-game shooting woes remained an issue Wednesday night. The Bulldogs made a single three in the first quarter and were only able to muster two more in the second. All in all, the Bulldogs shot 3-18 from downtown and 12-35 overall through a half of play.
Thankfully for Concordia, the poor accuracy seemed to be contagious, as the game was relatively close through the first half with the Lancers heading into the locker room at halftime only down seven, 30-23.
A notable effort through the early goings was junior Abby Krieser, who accounted for most of Concordia’s offense early on. Beginning her night by scoring seven of the Bulldog’s 14 first quarter points, Krieser would finish the night as the most potent shooter, going seven to eleven overall and two to six downtown, netting her 17 points, three rebounds and two assists.
The Concordia offense would return to form as the night wore on, having shot a respectable 39.5 percent from the field and 27.5 percent from three when the final whistle blew. By the fourth quarter, all was over except the crying as the Bulldogs ballooned their lead to 20 by the game’s end.
Leading the way for Concordia was junior Taysha Ruston who boasted one of her better shooting performances of the season. The Texan had 22 points on the night on nearly 50 percent shooting, draining eight to seventeen from the field and three to nine from beyond the arch to go along with five rebounds and a couple of assists.
Overall, Concordia avoided making the same mistake twice in their second of two contests against a Dakota team. Just like a good diesel pickup, the Bulldogs were able to get up and running after a cold start.
Concordia will be looking to establish a new win streak on Saturday when the Bulldogs face off against the Briar Cliff Chargers in Sioux City, Iowa. Tip off for the Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup is 2 p.m.
