The Concordia wrestling team showed aggression and persistence this Saturday at the Sioux City Open with overall strong performances and several deep Consolation Bracket runs.

In the 125 lbs weight class, junior Aidan Trowbridge started off the day strong with two wins in the Championship round but was not able to keep the momentum going and suffered three losses in a row, one in the consolation bracket to sophomore teammate Gabe Lujan, who bounced back from an initial first-round loss.

Across the 149 lbs and 157 lbs divisions, the Bulldogs put up some decent performances with a few championship and consolation wins but were overall unable to perform deep into either of the rounds.

By far the most consistent performance from Concordia came from sophomore Simon Arredondo, who had a first-round championship win followed by a loss, and then three wins in a row in the consolation round, one by technical fall.

Across the roster, the Bulldogs were able to add several technical fall wins to the board, including a few by junior Blane Boehmer and sophomore Ramon Arredondo in the 184 lbs division. Concordia suffered just as many losses by technical fall, however, which contributed to their inability to perform deep into the championship round.

A substantial area of strength came from the team’s performance in the consolation bracket, where several Bulldogs were able to rack up wins and make it to the fourth and fifth rounds.

Next Saturday, Feb. 7, Concordia wrestling will travel to Crete, Nebraska, where they will take on several Great Plains Athletic Conference wrestling programs in the second Great Plains Athletic Conference Day of Duals Tournament.
