The Concordia men’s soccer team came up short over the weekend in Sioux City against the Morningside Mustangs in a hard-fought 3-1 battle.
The first half seemed slow at first with relatively few shots by either side. 28 minutes in, Morningside was the first to strike with a shot from deep, which Concordia goalkeeper Nolan Fuelberth saw late due to the crowd in front of him. The Bulldogs tried to strike back with a little offensive aggression of their own with a shot by junior Oliver Benson seconds before the break that went wide of the goal.
Into the second half, the Mustangs established a strong offensive presence and managed to keep the ball in Concordia’s end with several shots in the first minutes. After a few substitutions, the Bulldogs were able to get possession of the ball and put some pressure on Morningside’s goal, but were unable to come up with anything
The rest of the second half looked to be more of an even match, with both teams able to put pressure on the opposing team’s defense. The Mustangs, however, had the competitive advantage with more shots and were able to score again with an offensive drive to the goal.
With minutes remaining in the game, the Bulldogs got their opportunity to try and even the score after a yellow card for a foul in the box on Morningside. Sophomore Ricards Busmeisters’ penalty kick broke through to make the score 2-1.
With seconds left to go, however, Morningside was once again able to get a penalty kick of their own and win 3-1. Next Wednesday, the Bulldogs hope to improve upon their now 4-0-8 record in Hastings against Hastings at 5:30 p.m.
