Freshman firepower defeats Doane in final minutes of play

Concordia men’s soccer took down Doane University, 2-1, away from home on Wednesday, scoring both of their goals via freshmen in the final 10 minutes of play.
Going into the game, Concordia had not lost a match against Doane in nearly 15 years; the last time was the 2012 season. Things looked a bit dicey for the first 80 minutes, but the Bulldogs prevailed to extend their win streak to three games, while also quietly continuing their dominance over the Doane Tigers.
The first half found its ending with zero goals on the scoreboard and a very limited number of total shots. Concordia only managed to fire two; one was by junior Lucas Montino, who smacked it off the post. The other five shots in the half were provided by Doane, of which three ended in the hands of Bulldog goalie, junior Florian Quast.
The second half took on the opposite form of the first for Concordia. While they found themselves down 1-0 at minute 76:36, they were still able to put some much-needed pressure on the Tigers. The Bulldogs doubled their shot total to four in the half and pushed Doane to commit nine fouls. In the 81st minute, freshman Elijah Fulton took his second shot of the day and found the back of the net for the first goal of his career. Roughly five minutes later, time being of the essence, freshman William Preston took a chance and scored to put Concordia on top 2-1.
The score would stay that way for the rest of the match and turn into Concordia’s fourth win of the year. In the game, the Bulldogs took eight total shots and left with 75% shooting accuracy. Quast added five saves this game, taking his season total to 27.
20 fouls were split between the two teams throughout the match, six by Concordia and 14 by Doane. The Tigers were also handed four yellow cards that all took place within the second half.
Concordia Soccer improves their record to 2-0 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play and 4-4 overall. They will play Morningside University (3-3-3) at home this Saturday at 8:00 pm. The game is a rematch of last year’s GPAC tournament championship, which the Bulldogs won 2-1.
